Terrafirma Validation
Project
The Terrafirma Validation Project represents
a PSI validation exercise run within Terrafirma Stage
2. It is focused on the (currently) four ‘Operational
Service Providers’ (OSPs) who supply PSI products
to Recipients, i.e. Telerilevamento Europa, Altamira Information,
Gamma Remote Sensing and NPA.
Main objectives:
-
Comparison of the outputs
from the different PSI processing chains to certify
that all OSPs produce consistent results.
-
Provide independently
verified evidence of the quality of the PSI results.
-
Characterise the Terrafirma
H-1 products.
-
Clarify product limitations.
-
Make recommendations
as to product improvement.
The project includes two main parts:
-
Process validation:
Involves the inter-comparison of processed slant-range
outputs of the different OSPs, and the analysis of their
intermediate results. The goal of the Process Validation
is to test the “equivalence” of the OSP
chains, detecting the cause of differences in the results,
if any.
-
Product validation:
Where geocoded PSI products are validated against certifiable
groundtruth.
Validation is being conducted over two
test sites in the Netherlands which have complementary
characteristics:
-
The Alkmaar area: Has
a spatially correlated deformation field due to gas
extraction. This is being studied using ERS-1/2 (from
91 to December 2000) and ASAR-Envisat data. Groundtruth
is available in the form of levelling data.
-
The Amsterdam area:
Includes autonomous and (mainly) spatially uncorrelated
movements. For a part of the area groundtruth is available
from those involved in the construction of the new N-S
metro line. During the project, OSPs had no open access
to the groundtruth. However, some base information was
provided as to the nature of the ground motion and groundtruth
involved. The results of the project, therefore, have
an anonymous character.
The project includes the following participants:
-
Institute of Geomatics:
Project lead and product validation.
-
TNO: Groundtruth support,
and assistance in product validation.
-
DLR: Process validation.
-
TU Delft: Non-OSP PSI
processing, assistance in product validation.
-
BGS: Supervisor and
link to the Terrafirma Product Validation Workgroup.
-
The above mentioned
four OSPs.
-
NPA: Overall Terrafirma
project management.
The project started in September 2007, after
receiving the three datasets (ERS and ASAR Alkmaar, and
ASAR Amsterdam) processed by each of the four OSPs. The
final results of the project are expected by January 2008.
